Fruition Nova Garden Fruit Fly Lures & Trap FRUITION-NOVA AgNova

Description

Fruition Nova Garden Fruit Fly Lures & Trap are for home gardeners in all states except Victoria to monitor and manage fruit fly populations. Fruit flies are common pests in home gardens and commercial agriculture in Australia and are responsible for the loss of a wide range of fruit and vegetables each year.

Fruition Nova Lures & Traps are designed to attract and trap a wide range of pest fruit flies in the home garden using a unique, patented combination of trap shape, colour and attractant lures.

Fruition Nova Garden Fruit Fly Traps attract and trap all of the main pest species of fruit fly, including;

  • Queensland fruit fly (QFF;Bactrocera tryoni)
  • Lesser Queensland fruit fly (B. neohumeralis)
  • Jarvis’ fruit fly (B. jarvisi)
  • Cucumber fly (B. cucumis)
  • Mediterranean fruit fly (Medfly; C. capitata).

How does the Fruition Nova Garden Fruit Fly Lures & Trap work;

  • One part of the lure system is designed to attract egg-laying female fruit flies to the trap. This is a unique lure designed and developed by the International Centre for Management of Pest Fruit Flies at Griffith University in Brisbane.
  • The second lure is a protein bait that attracts immature male and female fruit flies to the trap, removing them from the garden before they have the opportunity to mate and lay eggs.
  • The Fruition Nova Garden Fruit Fly Lures & Trap design is the same as the trap widely used in commercial fruit and vegetable crops to manage fruit fly populations and reduce crop damage.

Fruition Nova Garden Fruit Fly Lures uses naturally occurring ingredients. Fruition Nova Garden Fruit Fly Traps are non-toxic and pesticide-free.

How are the Fruition Nova Garden Fruit Fly Lures & Trap used;

The Fruition Nova Lures & Trap can be used in either fruit trees or vegetable gardens/crops.

Trap placement in fruit trees;

  • Traps should be placed in the trees to be protected before the fruit becomes attractive to fruit flies. This is when the fruit is hard and green, around walnut size.
  • Use one trap per tree for trees up to 3 m in height, and two traps per tree for larger trees.
  • Hang the traps at around 1.5–2.0 metres above the ground on the northern side of the tree in the outer part of the canopy so that the trap is visible but not exposed to constant sunlight.
  • For trees greater than 3 m in height, hang a second trap on the southern side of the tree.

Trap placement in vegetable crops;

  • Traps should be secured to tomato stakes or similar rigid supports at a height just above the crop canopy and before the crop becomes attractive to fruit flies. This is as soon as the fruit/vegetable forms.
  • Use one trap per 10 m x 10 m area.

Fruition Nova Garden Fruit Fly Lures & Trap last for up to 12 weeks. However, traps should be replaced earlier if the sticky surfaces are covered by fruit flies or foreign objects, or the sachets are missing or trap itself is damaged.

It is essential to begin fruit fly control early in the season when the fruit is at the ‘hard-green’ stage, around the size of a walnut. In the home garden situation, this is especially important because there is usually a wide range of different fruits and vegetables available from early spring in which fruit flies can breed and establish for the summer. If control is not started early, populations will grow and cause problems later in the season.

Instructions for Trap Assembly

  • Unpack the Fruition Nova Garden Fruit Fly Lures & Trap.
    • Each Fruition Nova Garden trap consists of the following;
      • 2 x Fruition yellow discs
      • 1 x metal clip
      • 1 x Fruition lure sachet (blue)
      • 1 x Natflav 500 sachet (brown)
      • 1 x soft wire tie
  • To assemble a Fruition Nova Garden trap, tear open each sachet (one blue, one brown) approximately 20 mm where indicated, leaving the torn segment attached. Set each sachet aside.
  • Hold the discs at the non-adhesive areas at either top or bottom and remove all paper on both sides, ensuring sticky surfaces do not come into contact with other surfaces.
  • Arrange discs with slots opposing each other.
  • Slot discs together.
  • Place each sachet (one blue, one brown) on disc so each spike on clip will pierce each sachet, then pierce disc, when squeezed closed.
  • Squeeze both sides of the clip simultaneously to close firmly so that both sachets are secured, and the spikes penetrate through the opposite side of the disc.
  • Fold up spikes for extra security.
  • Thread the tie through the clip’s eyelet and securely hang the trap in the desired location.
